Justin Tolston, Executive Director and J.D. Candidate
The Equity in Justice Institute was founded by Justin Tolston during his final year at Thurgood Marshall School of Law. His legal experience includes serving as a research assistant for the Nebraska Attorney General, a legal observer for the National Lawyers Guild, and as a law clerk for the NAACP Houston Branch. Prior to pursuing a juris doctorate degree, he worked as a youth counselor at a residential treatment facility, case manager to individuals on Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, and in the banking industry. His literary work includes a vignette-styled autobiography and articles penned during his time as a community columnist for the Lincoln Journal Star.
Hon. April Walker, Special Advisor
Judge Walker is a well-published professor at Thurgood Marshall School of Law where she teaches criminal law, family law, and juvenile law. She previously served ten years as an Associate Judge for the City of Houston and is the current General Counsel for the Texas Southern University Faculty Senate. While not representing clients in any capacity on behalf of EJI, Judge Walker provides guidance on case analysis and legal strategies.
